Pod change and high numbers

We changed out E's pod today. When its time to make a pod change I get so nervous. We decided to put a pod on his thigh. E woke up from his nap in the high 200's. A hour later right before dinner he was in the high 300's. Fixed E his dinner and bolus for the high and dinner. A hour later checked him and he was almost 500!!! I called the Doctor and she said I need to give him insulin from a shot and change out the pod. Ok here we go again. I decided to use his other thigh (not ready to give up on my new pod site)

The new pod site and the 1/2 a unit of insulin (shot) brought his blood down fast. 1 1/2 hours later he was 68!!!! 20 minutes later after one juice only 71. Gave E one more juice and that brought him up to 117. I am guessing it must of been a bad pod???? I hope every thing is under control and we will have a uneventful night.

  2. Oh mercy! We have not had any bad pods or sites (crossing my fingers) but I know it can happen. I hope the new 'real estate' works out for you and E. Nate gets his best numbers there for some reason. I moved his pod to his bum today - we will see how it goes.

Thinking about you and hoping for a night full of good numbers!!

  3. It is so hard in the beginning. Troubleshooting is tricky. I'm glad things are up and working again, hope it is smooth sailing from here! Good luck!

  4. We've had a couple pods do that, but I don't really think it's the pods. It's just finding the right spot to put 'em. One I did on Liam's bum did that, and I remember that he tensed up right before it inserted, so I'm betting I hit muscle.
It's hard on these little guys that run around all day- they're all muscle! :) I've been wanting to try a leg on Liam, but I'm worried he'll pull it off when he goes to the bathroom, since he goes on his own. Maybe soon.

    Good luck tonight!

  5. That sounds tough, I have no experiance with pumps yet so I don't have any words of wisdom for you but I will be hoping that this new pod works better for you tonight :)

  8. I'm sorry to hear that. I agree with Jessica, that there is probably not something wrong with the Pod, but perhaps the site. We have not used the leg yet. Once we used the arm and it occluded and alarmed within 10 minutes. So we have kept to the belly and the back. It took us some time to find the spots that worked well for Caleb and I've been reluctant to move them. I have heard that when using the belly and back to place it east/west because north/south has a greater propensity for a kink. When you removed the Pod did you happen to notice if the cannula was kinked or there looked like a tissue build up? We sometimes see that toward day three. A rule of thumb that I follow that our trainer told us is if we see two unexplained highs to change it out. That's one of those tidbits that has stuck with me and I follow. I even did it today and I think the Pod was fine. As Wendy said, it's not very often that the site is an issue, but it does happen. I frequently find myself saying "it's almost never the pod, almost never the pod" just as a reminder, but have pulled out quite a few clean, smooth, functioning Pods nevertheless.
Okay - that was much longer than I intended - sorry 'bout that. Hope the night went well. :)
